The United States Senate in a historic win has passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. The vastly bipartisan legislation passed on Thursday in a vote of 89-10. The legislation directly aims to increase housing affordability in the United States where cost is currently at an all time high.
The bill appears similar to the legislation passed in the house on the 9th of last month; however, it contains the additional stipulation in section 901(4)(A)(ii), that bans any large institutional investors from owning in excess of 350 single family homes. This statute does not exist in the House version of the legislation and represents a more forward actionable policy against housing purchases.
The legislation heavily supported by Senator Elizabeth Warren now makes its way to the President's desk for signing, a feat that seems increasingly unlikely as Trump continues to declare that he will not sign any legislation until after the SAVE Act is passed.
With Trump writing in a social media post "I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed," the administration continues to concern congress with the potential for a long term stall in the legislative process.
Overall the road to housing act offers a potential avenue to reducing housing costs in the United States, with high bipartisan support it may be the most realistic chance at a solution, assuming that the collected congress can get it past the executive deadlock.
